Description
Black Unit Wins First Counter Attack in Korean War News Article. Digital image of news article from St. Joseph News Press. Reminiscence of Kathryn Gamble.
Kathryn remembers that blacks in the military were segregated prior to the Korean War. President Truman has issued an executive order to integrate the services. She was in downtown St. Joseph one day when she read a headline that indicated the first attack by the Americans in Korea was a black unit. By the end of that war, she states all the services integrated. Her relative, Alvin Hoggatt served in the Navy aboard the USS Butler. She asserts that of the 33,629 Americans killed in the Korean War, 3223 were black.
