Description
Border and the Buffalo is described on cover page as "The Bloody Border of Missouri and Kansas. The Story of the slaughter of the Buffalo. Westward among the Big Game and Wild Tribes. A story of mountain and plain." Cook tells of events in early Kansas history and buffalo hunting in the late 1860s and 1870s. Cook first came to Kansas in the 1850s and served in the Kansas infantry during the Civil War. Cook died in 1917 in Kansas. The book is a reminiscence of his life.
The reason for the call number Pony Express instead of Western is that beginning on page 16 is a description and eye-witness account of the Battle of Baxter Springs and the death of Pony Express rider Johnny Fry. This is only known account of Johnny Fry's participation and death.
