Description

Bound for Idaho: The 1864 Trail Journal of Julius Merrill is the only record known to describe in its entirety what in that Civil War year was the major route of the Oregon Trail. It ran from St. Joseph via the Pony Express, over the Leavenworth, Independence, Fort Kearny, South Pass, and Honey Lake wagon roads to South Pass Station, and from there to Boise City via the Lander Road and Goodale's Cut Off. This diary captivates what Civil War gold rush travel conditions were like, including the state of Indian relations after two decades of emigrant traffic through Indian lands. 219/Softbound/Illustrations/Maps.
