Bourgmont, Explorer of the Missouri, 1698-1725 is a comprehensive look at one Frenchman's exploration of the lower and middle Missouri River and its tributaries beginning around 1712. Bourgmont spent approximately 10 years living with the Indians, and is the first known white man to have explored the lower and middle Missouri and its tributaries. He came to this territory as a military deserter and outlaw and returned to France where he was elevated to the nobility and awarded the Cross of St. Louis. The author retraced the Bourgmont's journeys. This book includes the first accurate and complete English translation of the three key documents stemming from Bourgmont's explorations. Page 22 and 23 is a map of the lower Missouri River in 1716.
