Scope and Content

Bullock, Ecy St. Joseph News-Press February 2, 2014 has an article about W.E. B. DuBois who described the exceptional people among his race as the 'The Talented Tenth' Dr. DuBois was an early 20th century black author, historian and civil rights activist who said that with honor came the responsibly to lift up the least in society. The News-Press recognizes some of those exceptional black men and women in our community: Ecy Bullock, business owner took over the family funeral business from his parents in 1990. The business has resided in Midtown since his father moved from Hannibal, MO to St. Joseph in 1974. He hasn't moved the business because he feels it's important for minority-owners to remain in the community. He stated that while it's important to maintain the future of the community it's important to honor people who made a difference in the black community in the past, we also need to recognize those outstanding individuals in our midst today. These professionals can serve as mentors and role models for youths.
