Description

Afro-American's Quest for Education. The quest of Afro-Americans for education and school opportunities is a heroic chronicle of the determined and unceasing efforts of black men and women who never faltered in their endeavors to learn to read and write, to teach, and provide schools for their people. It is also the account of the efforts of a few humane and benevolent white people who incurred the scorn and abuses of their peers for establishing schools for Blacks, for teaching and championing the right to be educated. The slave labor system evolved during the more than two hundred years before its abolition in 1865. A few masters taught their slaves to read and write and encouraged them to express themselves in writing. There was a fear that the rising generation could grow up in ignorance was an important factor in the Black's quest for an education. The Civil War and the subsequent enlistment of Blacks into the Union Army gave a new trust to the quest for education.. The quest by Afro-Americans for education took on another dimension with the Supreme Court decision of 1954. Afro-Americans are today asking some old and some new questions about the school curriculum and its relevance for contemporary Black Americans as well as for the larger society. The quest for education by Afro-Americans continues. Elsie M. Lewis was born in Little Rock Arkansas, She received her A. B. Degree at Fisk University, Nashville TN, M. A.
