P1975.2.33Description
Canyon Pony Express Station Ruins, Utah, Photos, June, 1961. Two photos of ruins of rock walls at Canyon Station built to replace Burnt Station, two or three miles west that was less defendable in Indian attacks.
75.2.33 = Close-up of rock wall with gun port that made up the wall of the station. A man is kneeling at the wall pointing to the gunport.
Legend: "At the new location the station was called Canyon. It was built at a more defensive spot on the ridge south of Overland Canyon and was built of stone evidently to provide more protection against attack and burning as at Burnt Station. Note gun port inside of wall. Utah, 1961"
75.2.34 = Broader view of the rock wall ruin. Two men standing beside.
Legend: "Canyon Station. Overland stage stop high on the Deep Creek Range between Willow Springs and Deep Creek stations. View to eastward back across the Salt Lake Desert. In 1864 it had been re-located from a spot less defendable, two or three miles further west near top of canyon, where it served as a Pony Express stop. The original station, established in 1859, known as Burnt Station and according to local history burned twice by Indians. The original Burnt Station site is marked by a stone monument on which is stated, "It was burned and pillaged twice by Indians who killed five keepers and riders, and two soldiers. Utah, 1961".
