Scope and Content

Central High School (old) Athletic Field Proposal Blueprint, c. 1917. Blueprint of a school stadium with track and stadium seating, proposed to be built in the block bordered on west & east by 13th & 14th Street and on north & south by Olive Street & Penn Street. This is the area adjacent to the St. Joseph High School which sat near 13th & Olive. Proposal to St. Joseph School Board. Drawing by J. J. Johnson 1900 Duncan St., St. Joseph, MO. "Owing to a growing demand that something be done in our city toward having a suitable athletic field--a museum and a Legion hall, I submit for consideration this drawing as a suggestion towards that end. J. J. Johnson" "Note--This is what is known as Jesse James Hill and the above proposition it will be seen takes in only a very few houses. The seats should be of concrete and placed right on the ground. The ground 293 ft x 470 ft. is large enough for all purposes and in winter time a free skating rink of nature ice can be had inside of track. By securing the houses facing on Olive Street the grounds can be made considerable larger or the houses can be used as home for school teachers. This proposition should be of much interest to the school board for various reasons." Included plans for seating capacity of 25, 000; gymnasium in basement, Museum 1st floor, and Legion Hall, 2nd floor.
