Description

Chisholm Trail Cook, Pleas Smith & wife, in Elder Years, Photos (2), c. 1890. b/w. Copy of a portrait photo of an older man, with white hair/beard, standing next to his wife, seated in wicker chair. She may be Native American or Mexican descent. (91.1H.160 & 161are cropped version of #159, showing Pleas only.) Caption below: "Pleas Smith, born 1835 in Dewitt County, Texas, died 1907, was cook for Thornton Chisholm on the first Chisholm Trail cattle drive from Cardwell Flat to St. Joseph, Mo". Mrs. Fannie Chisholm Hurst has written a book that gives evidence that her ancestor, Thornton, and not his older brother Jesse, opened the original Chisholm trail when he drove cattle from southern Texas to St. Joseph in 1866.
