Chisholm Trail to St. Joseph, 1866 Information File, 1966. File folder containing information provided by descendant of Thornton Chisholm, who arguably was the founder of the first cattle drive overland from Texas to Missouri.
In 1866 after the Civil War, herds of longhorn cattle had burgeoned on the idle land during the War. Attempts to get them to market over the 1500-mile route to the nearest rail line were met with opposition from Missouri farmers at the border fearing that the wild cattle carried disease that would infect their domestic animals and objected to the cattle tramping over their fields. Thornton was able to turn his herd up through Kansas to arrive at the Hannibal & St. Joseph railhead.
