Christian Brothers High School Remarks for Class of 1925 Silver Jubilee Banquet, 1950. Letter from Brother James of Mary responding to Gene Waldron's request to attend the 1950 Alumni Banquet honoring the class of 1925. Because he cannot attend, Bro. James sends his reminescence to be read at the banquet.
The Class of 1925 attended school at the "Shack" (12th & Henry). The class completed a 3-year commercial course in 1923 and remained for 2 added years of regular high school courses. This year the old C.B.C. was accepted by the University of Missouri and accredited by the State Educational Association.
1925 was the 200th anniversary of the Christian Brothers. Bro. James remembers the alumni banquet at Hotel Robidoux where a fund-raising campaign was announced for a new school and that fall the property on Noyes Boulevard was purchased after it was brought to the Brothers attention by Tom Carbry. This plot of land, he writes, had been the "former rendezvous of the K.K.K. and their fiery cross orgies."
He finishes with this salute:
"with the class of 1825 in the limelight--and then in fancy looking into the future and beholding the mighty concourses of Christian Brothers Alumni who will meet--long after we have become but a memory--to bring back the good old days of pure and lasting loves, of vaulting ambitions and lofty dreams. Way back there is a mother's love and pride, a father's affection and the boyish faces of loyal friends. Back there too are the days of sunshine when we looked Life fearlessly in the face and swore to be men worth while to self and fellowman. And back there, looming up among all the cherished memories, stand the old school with its Godly traditions, its manly counsels, and its noble and saving principles. Yes, there stands Alma Mater that took all these holy and good and noble things that were in our boyish hearts, and welded them into holy and mighty purposes that somehow have shaped our every thought and act.
Tonight, we cast off distrust, and reserve and reticence, and sit down as fellow alumni to think and speak of days gone by when we were happier than we knew, and once again to nourish ourselves with the goodly ideals of Alma Mater, and to keep alive these ideals despite of discouragements and the pessimistic spirit of the age. Take courage, and remember that there is an ever growing need of you high-minded, clear thinking, clean-living men. The fields of political activity, of moral and social betterment, and of economic endeavor in this nation need men of head and heart who know the saving principles of Holy Mother Church, men alive with the inspiration of her ideals, men who have the courage to declare these same ideals and principles and to live them."Lexicon
