Scope and Content

Civil War Letter: Parker, Benjamin from Alabama Cotton Press to Sister, 1864. New Orleans. He wrote that he enjoyed his birthday. He got the box she sent. As he did not use tobacco he sold it for $3.00. He liked the shirts and stockings. He cares about white collars as he is in the city and is acquainted with a number of families in New Orleans and is invited to call upon them and he likes to look clean and he has to pay 5 cents a piece for paper collars. He is acquainted with a Dr. Parker and has been to his house to eat dinner with him and his wife invited him to call often. He states that there are a great many ladies and children on the street in the afternoon and they dress very fine. He thanks her for the soap and says he has enough black thread, ink, paper, and buttons, but would like a white handkerchief with the stars and stripes on it. He tells her the way they eat chicken is to shake the feathers off them and put them in a kettle to boil. Dated March 17, 1864.
