He states that small pox is raging and many children have died. General Banks the first day fight rebs drove the Union army back 9 miles. They captured 27 pieces of artillery and a large number of army wagons. They have over 1,000 wounded. He mentions that the army hasn't much confidence in General Gegle. The rebs have turned water off so their gunboats were aground. The rebel General Joel Johnson is threatening the rear of Baton Rouge and Port Hudson and the Red river is a bad place Dated May 4, 1864. B is envelope addressed to Louisa Parker No. 42 Springfield Street, Boston, Mass. Cancelled stamp New Orleans L. A May 4. In upper left hand corner is Sanitary Commission N. E. Women's Auxiliary Association 22 Summer Street, Boston.
