Scope and Content
Civil War Letter: Parker, Benjamin near Washington D.C. to his Sister Louisa, 1864. Tennally Town is 6 miles from Washington D.C. The front page of the letter has 3 drawings-a woman, child and soldiers. Under the picture it says "Who Will Care For Mother Now". Verses and chorus follow under the title. The whole regiment got orders to go up to Fort Slocum and cut down young woodlets on a high hill 1 1/2 miles beyond the fort. It was hot and dusty . They could see the chimneys of Mr. Blair's mansion that the journeys burnt when they tried to get in. There is not half force enough to man all the works around Washington. It is very hilly country here and they have cut down large orchards so they can get good range from the Forts. President Lincoln and General Grant has been up there the day before. Dated August 12, 1864.
