Research Notes

Notes

This is likely a U.S. Army Model 1939 Enlisted Man's Wool Overcoat, which was commonly called a "greatcoat." Standard issue to all enlisted soldiers during World War II, this coat was made from heavy olive drab melton wool. It saw heavy use in the Aleutian Islands campaign and during the harsh winter months in the European theater. Thousands of these coats were rushed to the front lines during the Battle of the Bulge to combat a critical shortage of warm winter clothing.
