Conrad, Thomas: Correspondence from Brother, Peter Conrad, 1858-1869. Letters written to Thomas Conrad in Savannah, Missouri and St Joseph from his older brother Peter.
Peter had come out to Missouri from Pennsylvania to help Thomas in the Savannah, Missouri, blacksmith shop in 1845, when Simon returned to New Orleans to complete a contract. In 1858, Peter is living in Mt. Sterling, Osage County, Missouri, where he is unhappy with the opportunities and, as a Catholic, to live among Protestants.
By 1861, Peter, who had lost his first wife, was remarried and living in Dorchester, Illinois. Much of these letters represent an argument between Peter and Thomas considering opinions about Negroes and abolition. Neither support abolition but Peter is a supporter of the Union, and Thomas is not. Evidently, Thomas stops writing and, in 1864, Peter sends a social letter asking for resuming communication. When it does, Peter learns of Thomas's having to close his St. Joseph business during the War and his intention to go to Idaho. By 1868, content has return to discussion of family & business, and Thomas's building a house in St. Joseph (although they do discuss Grant's election as President).
