Scope and Content

Conrad, Thomas: Letters from Extended Family & Friends, 1857-1867. Various handwritten letters, some transcribed, from Joseph Conrad, a cousin, and various friends. A = From Joseph A. Conrad, 1862-1863. Joseph is student at St. Benedicts in Atchison, Kansas, His letters variously inquire about employment in St. Joseph, requests a copy of a bookkeeping text, and notify of a store he has started in Atchison in 1863. Joseph's father is a 'union' man and Joseph wonders if that is why Thomas doesn't write his uncle. B = From J.G. Tisdale, July 29, 1857 from Savannah. General news about persons they know. Suggests that Thomas is especially interested in a female named Eliza. Written 4 months before Thomas's marriage to Mary Ivory. C = From P.H. Shields, Loretto, PA & Poughkeepsie, NY, 1857-1861. Perhaps an older man Thomas has sought advice from. His advice is to take a wife, but look for good woman, not just one who has money. Also to stay where you can make a living, In 1860, he reports on the health & death of Mary Ivory Conrad's father. In 1861, after the Battle of Bull Run, he has changed his perspective and supports the President, which Thomas does not. He advises Conrad to be careful of joining men that could ruin him in the end. In Sept. 1861, he mentions Gen. Price, the battle of Lexington, and the troubles in Southwest Missouri. D = George C. Conrad, Monrovia, Jan. 31, 1867. After deciding to "cross the plains", Geo. asks Thomas if there are any teams leaving St. Joseph that spring. E = From George M., May 23, 1858 (?). Remarks on Thomas' s recent marriage and discusses a lawyer taking care of business for his mother.
