Description

Corby (Kate O.) as small Girl with her Mother, c. 1890. b/w. Oval portrait print (A) of older woman with white hair posed with girl about age 4. The woman has completely white hair and is wearing a dark dress of 1880-1900 vintage. Handwritten on the back is Mrs. John Corby. This portrait is purported to be the Mrs. John Corby (Kate Aisquith) with whose family Hannah Cross came to St. Joseph from Virginia. However, that Mrs. Corby, was married to John Corby on July 25, 1900. Perhaps the little girl is Kate O., whom Hannah Cross cared for. (See 2017.47.3 for discussion of Cross's residence with Aisquith in 1870) B = Snapshot of Edward M. Aisquith's (1842-1911) gravestone. Co. B, 12 VA, Cav. Roseers Bridge, C.S.A. color, 4" x 6".
