Description

Phase 2, Archaeological Testing of Prehistoric Site 23BN40, Buchanan County, Missouri and Phase 3, Archaeological Site Excavation of a Woodland Period Site, in the St. Joseph Landfill. Phase 2 archaeological testing, in July and August 1995, and Phase 3 archaeological excavation in October and November 1996, was conducted at site 23BN40 by the St. Joseph Museum. Previous to these subsurface investigations, the site had been severely damaged by soil borrown activities associated with the operation and expansion of the St. Joseph landfill in northern Buchanan County, Missouri. It was found that over 90 percent of the site had been destroyed and the remainder sustained some impact from the landfill activities. The remaining portion of this late Woodland (early Middle Ceramic) site contained a small amount of cultural material (i.e. pottery sherd, chert flakes, etc) in the plowzone and scattered in a relatively thin level below the plowzone. No cultural features were discovered in the 34 square meters excavated. It seems quite doubtful that any additional significant scientific data (beyond what has been obtained) could be gleaned from what remains of the site. Includes a hand written note from Feagins inside to Mike and Marge Fisher 64/Report/Strap bound/Maps/Photographs/Tables.
