Description

Cultural Resource Survey of the Proposed City of St. Joseph Landfill Expansion Area (the Free Property), Buchanan County, Missouri. In January of 1992, Saint Joseph Museum personnel conducted an intensive cultural resource survey of the 105 acre St. Joseph Landfill expansion area (the former Marvin H. Free property). This is located east of the Pigeon Hill Wildlife Area in Buchanan County, Missouri. Two archaeological sites were discovered. Site 23BN41 is a mostly destroyed Euro-American farmstead. This site's history appears to be rather typical for farms in Buchanan County. It does not appear to meet the requirements for eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. A second site, 23BN40, contains a Late Woodland prehistoric component. At present there is insufficient data to determine the National Register eligibility status of this site. Avoidance of site 23BN40 is the preferred recommendation. 75/Report/strap bound/Maps/Photographs.
