Description

Cultural Resource Survey of a Portion of the Lone Jack Civil War Battlefield, Jackson County, Missouri--Area 02, Site 23JA606, April, 2003. A cultural resource (Phase I) survey conducted on ca. 28 acres (area 02) in which 27 acres were owned by a developer and includes part of the western portion of the Lone Jack Civil War Battlefield--site 23JA606. This survey was directed by Jim D. Feagins, mapped by Bert Wetherill, and was funded by the Friends of Historic Lone Jack in an effort to determine if Civil War artifacts still remain within this portion of the battlefield and to determine the limits of the site in this area. This property is adjacent to an existing, 3 acre county park and battlefield museum. The yards of two houses and a cultivated field were involved in the survey. The area surveyed contained evidence of the Civil War battle, the historic town of Lone Jack (platted in 1841), agricultural activities (modern and horse-drawn farming), and a prehistoric occupation. Lead bullets, a brass military button, and other artifacts were found from the Civil War battle. Container and window glass, stoneware, earthenware, square and round nails, iron screws, metal eating utensils, iron buckles, canning jar lids, links from iron chains, iron and copper wire, electrical items, nuts and bolts, iron wrench, pliers, filers, scissors, hand auger, a "horse-shoe" magnet, writing utensils, staples and tacks, a clock part, a metal toy tank, a metal token from a business in Gunn City, an 1854 coin, brick fragments, an iron latch, an iron hinge, horseshoes, bits, springs, a brass harmonica part, an overall snap, pieces of farm equipment, prehistoric chert flakes and cores, and a variety of other items were recovered from the old town site and adjacent field. Inserted into report: Missouri Association of Professional Archaeologist Newsletter, Vol1:2, 2003. Page 4 article on this survey submitted by Jim D. Feagins. July, 5, 2004 email from Jim Feagins to Mike Fisher concerning a second investigation scheduled for a different area at the site. 148/Report/Spiral Bound/Maps/Photographs/Tables.
