Denver, J.W., General Portrait Photo, c. 1870s. b/w. Copy of photo taken in St. Joseph by Lozo Photography. Denver was 5th Territorial Governor of Kansas in 1858, having been appointed by James Buchanan. In 1845, he was a lawyer practicing in Platte City, MO, but after the Mexican War moved to California and became a U.S. Representative. In 1857, Buchanan named him Commissioner of Indian Affairs, then Kansas Territorial Governor. A land speculator in Colorado, then part of the Kansas Territory, named his new city, Denver, after this man, hoping to make Denver the State Capital when the time came.
Denver was born in 1817 in Virginia. He held command of all troops in Kansas at the start of the Civil War in 1861, and later served under W.T. Sherman, commanding the 3rd Brigade/5th Division, and among others was involved in the Siege of Corinth.
Why Denver was in St. Joseph in the 1870s for the Lozo special collection is unknown. Alex Lozo Photographer made a special collection of local civic and political leaders.Made/Created
