Scope and Content
Doll Museum Scrapbook, Concerning the challenges in acquiring Orrel Andrews Collection and establishment of permanent home for Doll Museum, 1967-1968 .
News paper clippings describing the organization formed in an attempt to acquire the Orrel Andrews Doll Collection. (Andrews was the founder of the St. Joseph Children's Museum). An index card with the names of the original committee fronts the scrapbook. This committee became the Society of Memories, which established the Doll Museum in St. Joseph. Alyce Heady, to whom this scrapbook may have belonged, was the first president.
Orrel Andrews, in the notebook accompanying her doll collection, had intended to donate the collection to the St. Joseph Museum, but had not so provided in her will. Efforts by the Society of Memories to raise sufficient funds to purchase the collection fell short, and the collection, after many efforts to avert it, was sold at auction to a high bidder from outside St. Joseph, who sold off the collection as individual pieces.
The Society was able to buy a few of the dolls from this collection, and with other donated dolls founded the Doll Museum at 1501 Penn in 1968.
