Description

Dow, W.C., Company K, 4th Iowa Volunteers, Union Army, Photos (2), c. 1863. b/w. Man in Union Army military uniform, seated, holding rifle at his side. Two of same photo, 8 x 10 and 5 x 7. Typed on back: "W.C. Dow, Company K, 4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Killed at Battle of Vicksburg (later denied). Grandfather of Walter E. Dow, 1206 Ashland Ave. St. Joseph, Mo." A letter from W.C. Dow as he camped near the Vicksburg battlefield in May, 1863 was published in Museum Graphic, Vo. XVIII, No.1, mistakenly suggesting Dow had died after writing the letter. However, a note in the file states: "W.C. Dow--This man did not die as stated in the Graphic...The article states that he died at Vicksburg in 1863. He died in Clarinda, Iowa, July 9, 1911. He was born December 1836 in New York. He lived in Iowa. He came to St. Joseph in 1909 or 1910 to stay with his son at 2209 Vories Street. His family has many letters written by Dow describing the Civil War." Original digital scan located on History CD 01.
