Context

Observations by O'Brien There is an old German proverb that says. "The best carpenters make the fewest chips." This is a rather whimsical way of implying that wasted effort can be worse than no effort at all. . . . . I have seen a good deal of extremely capable work underway at this hospital, in the short time I have been here. . . . In other areas I see signs of considerable expended effort, with insufficient results to account for the man and work hours involved. Let's remember that surplus chips can constitute a hazard. If one stumbles over such an impediment the outcome may be more serious than a sore toe! I shall leave the analogy behind and talk straight from the shoulder now. (You may be sure there are no chips to be found here.) It is far more rewarding to put forth one's best efforts than to waste time in the great game of 'Beating the Clock'. . . . . . Samuel Johnson sums up my thoughts on this subject quite succinctly: "Labor, if it were not necessary for the existence, would be indispensable for the happiness of man." . . . . As we toil together in the challenging opportunity to minister to the the sick and see many of them improve and return to their homes, we should be happy in our work. Let us all double check our own particular efficiency quotients. . . . . Let the chips fall where they may. But, as few as possible, please. Liam O'Brien, M.D.
