Description

Dug Cut, Paris Avenue Photos (6), 1966/ b/w. Six views of Dug Cut, a deep rut cut in the river bluffs dug before the Civil War as an easier means of getting goods from the Missouri River into the town of St. Joseph. It was the main route from the city to French Bottoms, before the flood that changed to route of the river. It was first used in the 1840s. A ferry ran from French Bottoms on the Missouri side to Belmont on the Kansas side. Legend has it that it was widened during the Civil War to provide a better road to a Union fortification on Prospect Hill. It was further widened by the city in 1865. It was also known as Paris Avenue and houses were built along it. In 1973, the Missouri State Department of Transportaion converted it to carry two parallel lanes of the West Belt Highway (1-229) and residences were removed. 91.1H.228 = Dug Cut, "View to southward, known at time as Paris Avenue" Distance view of dirt road dug through hills, telephone poles lining road to bend in road. dated 4-26-66. 91.1H.229 = Dug Cut, "View to southward from bridge, known at the time as Paris Avenue".
