Description

Early Western Travels, 1748-1846, Vol. 18. Pattie's Personal Narrative, 1824-1830; Willard's Inland Trade with New Mexico, 1825; Downfall of the Fredonian Republic; and Malte-Brun's Account of Mexico. The Pattie and Willard accounts are edited by Timothy Flint. (1) Subtitled: Personal Narrative during an expedition from St. Louis, through the vast regions between that place and the Pacific Ocean, and thence back through the City of Mexico to Vera Cruz, during Journeyings of six years, etc. Edited by Timothy Flint in 1833. (This is a separate publication from "Early Western Travels: 1748-1846," in which series this appeared as Volume X XVIII) Sylvester Pattie and his son, James Ohio, joined Bernard Pratte's trading expedition to Santa Fe. They first ventured to the Pawnee villages of the Platte. The narrative includes their encounters with Comanches, grizzly bears, across what is now Kansas and into the Taos valley in New Mexico. They trapped the Gila River and visited the copper mines of Santa Rita, being the first Americans in the upper Gila valley. From there they trapped up the Colorado across South Pass, thence back toward northern Mexico and Texas. Pattie visited the missions of California during the Mexican regime, finally returning to Cincinnati, penniless, having endured incarceration at the hands of the Mexicans. Actual first editor of James O. Pattie's narrative is Timothy Flint. Also included are narratives by Doctor Willard and his "Inland Trade with New Mexico" and "Downfall of the Fredonian Republic" also edited by Timothy Flint. The last chapter is about "Mexico--Some Account of its Inhabitants, Towns, Productions, and Natural Curiosities" under the name of Conrad Malte-Brun. 379 pages/Hardbound/Illustrations.
