Description
Early Western Travels. Volume 5 of 32. Bradbury's travels in the Interior of America 1809-1811.
Subtitled: Travels in the Interior of America in the Years 1809, 1810, 1811 including a Description of the Upper Louisiana, together with the States of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, with the Illinois and Western Territories and containing Remarks and Observations useful to Persons Emigrating to those Countries.
John Bradbury, a English naturalist, was commissioned in 1809 by the Botanical Society at Liverpool to make some researches into plant life in the United States. He accompanied the overland Astorian expedition and this journal is concerned with the tour from St. Louis to the Arikara villages; then with Ramsay Crooks to the fur-trading station among the Mandan; finally returning downriver in 1811 with Henry M. Brackenridge in one of Manuel Lisa's fur-trading boats. He collected botanical specimens. His return to England was delayed because of the U.S. war of 1812.
