Object: pottery, Artist/Maker: unknown (20th Century, Various Tribes: Southwest), Title/Model: 5 Earthenware Pots & Ollas, Date/Region: ca. 1960-1990 / Southwest, Medium/Technique: polychromed earthenware / coil by hand, Edition/Series: unique, 1 of 1, Size: 3" H x 4" W (largest), Condition: average - good (upper left pot, chipped edge; lower right, abrasions), Signature/Inscriptions: largest: "PB Shebola", redware with grass: "Nena L O", white with black at 5 o'clock: "Betty Shelby", Exhibitions/Literature: n/a, Description/Notes: A variety of miniature pots from various tribes. Includes an informational paper that says: Patricia Baxter Shebola Patricia Baxter Shebola (Hopi/Zuni) currently resides in Lawrence, Kansas. She was reintroduced to clay while attending Haskell Indian Nations University. After graduation from Haskell, Patricia did two tours of duty for the National Park Service, working with the collections at Effigy Mounds National Monument in Northeast Iowa and at the NPS Repository in Lincoln, NE. While at Lincoln, she studied for a degree in Museum studies at the University of Nebraska. Recently, Patricia has returned to Haskell Indian Nations University to teach traditional Native American hand building methods. Patricia participated in workshops with a number of Native American artists: Leslie Duane Evans (Laguna/Potawatomi), Emma Lewis Mitchell and Dolores Lewis Garcia (Acoma), Barbara Gonzales (San Ildefonso), Mark Tabho (Hopi), Bernice Monte (Tohono O'odham), and Michael Kabotie (Hopi). Patricia has attended Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on Deer Isle, ME for four clay sessions. These studio session instructors: Wayne Bates (Blood River Studio), Winnie Owens-Hart (Howard University), Christina Bertoni (School of Art and Design), and Annabeth Rosen (University of California - Davis). Patricia's clay work is a bending of her two Hopi and Zuni pottery traditions. Her forms are a mix of traditional and contemporary shapes and designs. Patricia places her bowls on raffia rings- w hih she makes for each one. Patricia participates in the following Indian Markets/Art Shows: Heard Museum Indian Fair and Market, Haskell Indian Art Market, Cherokee Art Market, Red Earth Festival, Cahokia Mounds Art Market, Zuni Expo, Santa Fe Indian Market, Eiteljorg Indian Market and smaller art shows and Pow Wows.
