Mrs. Ellen J. Macfarland, was born to William Word, 1807 to 1878, and Susan Wright Barton
Word, 1811 to 1879. She married Lewis Leach and they had one child, Mary Word, later
wife of J. B. Moss. Mr. Leach died in 1873 and Mrs. Ellen Leach was later married to Mr.
Macfarland in 1883. She died in 1917. Mr. Macfarland had come to St. Joseph from St.
Louis three years prior to his marriage. He suffered from a heart ailment and does not
appear to have lived very long after his marriage, perhaps another three years. I believe
they are both buried in the Word/Leach plot at Mt. Mora Cemetery, St. Joseph, Mo. There
are newspaper notices of their marriage and deaths in Mary Leach Moss's personal family
scrapbook, jpg 12729. Mary Leach Moss would have been 16 at the time of her mother's
second marriage.
