Scope and Content

Field, Skits In 1870 Costumes, 1950. Costumes of the 1870's are being sought by the committee planning the observance here in September for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Eugene Field, poet who once worked on the St. Joseph Gazette news staff. Garments which the committee are seeking to borrow for the celebration, which will be held on the lawn of the St. Joseph Museum, include two men's suits and three dresses for women. The costumes will be worn by the participants in several short skits or dramatizations of incidents in the life of Mr. Field, who gained fame as the children's poet." One of the skits will center around the writing of "Little Boy Blue," and another will be based on his first meeting with Miss Julia Comstock of St. Joseph who became his bride. To be included in the program will be a skit, "Field Day," written by Rose Herzog. The continuity for the celebration, which will include narration of only a few of the writer's shorter works, is being prepared by a committee headed by Ada Clair Darby and including John Pooley Wright and Dward Moore. Emily Stauber was named chairman of the publicity committee. Other members are Roy Coy, and Edwin McDonald.
