"The night is chill and the wind is keen
As it blows from the icy pole,
But a chillier blight
Than wind or night
Is gnawing away in my soul.
"I have been to Foley's and all around
Where he keepeth his credit green,
And I give a groan
When I learn that Stone
Plays with his d---d machine."
With a humptytum and a clikytyclick
This secret vice is done
By some it is played
For a regular trade,
But Melville does it for fun!
To an upper room that is thick with gloom
And reeking with smells unclean
He steals away
At the close of day
To play with that d---d machine!
"Oh, who will pay for the billiard snaps
And who for the bowling , too!
And who will treat
To the things to eat?
Yes, Echo ansers, "Who?"
Oh, curse these things with their cogs and springs
The secret vise, I mean
And speed the day
When the editor may
Not play with his d---d machine!"
