Description
First Black Vs. White School Basketball Game in St Joseph News Article, January 9, 1951. Digital images (2) of two sections of news article by Alonzo Weston in St. Joseph News Press c. 2001 profiling the first time a black high school, Bartlett High, was allowed to play against a white school, Christian Brothers, in the city.
At the time Missouri Law forbade black schools from playing white public schools, but Christian Brothers was a private Catholic school. Bartlett High played in the all-Negro league, playing mostly in Kansas. Christian Brothers played in the city league. The St. Joseph School District threatened to kick CB out of the city league if it played the game.
The game was held at Bartlett High School to a packed house with police and fire department stationed outside in case of trouble. CB, with all its team members over 6' tall, won the game in the final minutes. Don Bundy of the Bartlett team, and Gene Clark a member of the CB team were quoted in the article.
