15-CENT AEROGRAMME
( a picture of the envelope)
The 15-cent Aerogramme will be first placed on sale at Chicago, Illinois on May 28, 1971
in conjunction with the opening day activities at COMPEX (Combined Philatelic Exhibition of Chicagoland).
The aerogramme, which was designed by Soren Noring, of New Rochelle, New York, consists of two elements,
which combined to provide an indicia nearly 4½ inches wide. To the left, in gray, are a flock of eight birds in flight.
To the right is a white rhomboid, in which is set, in interlocking fashion a red "U" a white "S" and a blue "A."
Underneath this in gray is "postage 15¢." Lower left on the aerogramme is "via air mail par avion."
An initial printing of 30 million will be produced by gravure by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on the
new Andreotti press.
The aerogramme measures 8½ by 11-9/16 inches and folds to 3-9/16 by 7¼ inches. The one it replaces folds
to 3-9/16 by 5-11/16. Paper weight is 18 pounds, in contrast to the former's 13 pounds. The heavier stock can
be fed more effectively into the facer cancelling machines.
Collectors desiring first day cancellations may obtain these through the Postmaster, at Chicago, Illinois 60607,
addressing the request "First Day 15¢ Aerogramme," giving name and address, including Zip Code, with remittance
to cover the cost which is 15 cents for each aerogramme.Lexicon
