Description

Footprints of Assurance is is a comprehensive and complete record of fire marks used by fire insurance companies in sixty-three countries. These fire marks were attached to buildings by insurance companies to indicate those for whom they wrote policies. Some "European fire assurance concerns maintained their own fire brigades whose function was to fight fires only at those properties protected by their parent companies whose mark they displayed." These symbols were posted on the exterior of insured buildings. These symbols are also highly collectible. The science of collecting these marks is called "Signeviery." Included in this volume are not only American marks, but British marks and those of 63 foreign countries around the world. 319/Hardbound/Illustrations
