Essay: For the Sake of Argument, discussing the merits of debating an opinion. Author not listed.Context
For the Sake of Argument.
There are people born into the world, who, for unknown, harbor within themselves provocation to contradiction and inspiration to argument. In as such as many ideas are germinated by the heat of argument, and wax great and strong through the fires of contradiction, this characteristic may be looked upon as a curse or a gift, according to taste and open to argument, and the possessors thereof may regard themselves as missinoaries in the field of thought, who like others of that denomination often subject themselves to considerable discomfort. We often hear the expression "hazard an opinion", doubtless invented by one of those who embody disputation, and who knew by experience how hazardous may be the release of a idea, and realize the responsibility they assume when they start something in the brain of the polemically- minded. it behooves them therefor to exercise due perapicacity in their choice of thoughts at least those that they permit to escape into a controversial world. Of course a preponderance of wits on either side may happily and end the ? on either side may happily, but many a time and often when the war of words is ended and the smoke of battle cooled, will be discovered the irresistible force and the immovable body still eyeing each other with a much gnawed but still recognizable bone of contention at rest between them.Lexicon
