From the Slave Cabin of Yani is the story of a beautiful young princess of the Jaloff tribe in Gambia who was brought to the United States by slave owner Daniel Denfield before 1807. For a time she was happy but eventually her husband and daughter were sold to other masters. Her story is a moving account of slavery and of a woman's hopes for her children and her people. Most slaves were unable to read or write, so "portions of 'slave history'. with its important incidents and events, were handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth from elder slaves.
The author, Virgil S. Powell of Savannah, MO, was the son of parents who were born into slavery shortly before the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. They later moved to St. Joseph where he went to school. He served in WWI and later became the first black man in the US to serve as head of a police department identification bureau and was located in Cedar Rapids, IA. The author's grandmother was able to read and write and jotted down certain stories which gave the author the information for this book.
