Scope and Content
Fry, Johnny: Rider of the Pony Express, Rare News Photos, Aug. 29, 1923. ( Vol. 134, No. 241) News photo of Johnny Fry and his brother Joseph and a friend Benton Wells on the front page. The picture was made in 1861. It shows the three boys in army uniforms.
The investigations incident to writing the historical pageant being presented this week at Lake Contrary resulted in Fry being officially deprived of the honor of being the first rider. A. William Richardson rode first, it was decided. But even with those who accept this verdict and there are hundreds who do not, Johnny Fry is still the greatest local hero of that achievement.
Also a picture of Johnny Fry belted and wearing a gun and knife, the latter being held sword fashion in the picture.
There is a picture of Mrs. Cadie Cordonier of near Blair, KS. Jonny Fry was her uncle, and the pictures of Fry shown here are her property.
