Headline: Racial prejudice loomed big in her school years.
Gamble tells the story about how whites and blacks in Elwood, Kansas socialized separately, although in high school they attended the same school. After school one day, a group of white students asked Kathryn to show them how to jitterbug. She found Otis Hayes in the hall and got him to dance with her to the piano music of Thelma Williams. They also demonstrated the chicken, trucking, huckle buck. They didn't get in trouble, but the news was about town about their dancing. Usually, Kathryn danced at the all black Casa Loma.
