Gay Sourette, a book by Ada Claire Darby. Illustrated historical Fiction set in the Louisiana Territory during the 1700's. Soeurette is the lively young daughter of the Commandant at the frontier trading-post, Ste. Genevieve, before the United Stated purchased Louisiana in 1803. Just living means daily adventure in those days. Indians came to trade; interesting visitors arrived on mysterious errands, and it was an exciting day when the flags of France and Spain were lowered forever and the Stars and Stripes raised over the fort. Soeurette knew everyone in Ste. Genevieve, from the old Padre to the blacksmith. She shared in everything that went on and made things happen beside, as on the day she fell asleep among the furs of an Indian's pack and was carried off into the wild.
Ada Claire Darby (1883-1953), of St. Joseph, Missouri, is widely recognized as an author of children's books, notably for girls. included are "Skip, Come -a-Lou"; "Hickory Goody", "Sometimes", "Jenny Wren", "Gay Soeurette", "Peace Pipes at Portage" "Look Away, Dixieland" and "Pull Away, Boatman." She was the daughter of a physician and included in St. Joseph most notable society.
