Description

George F. Baker and His Bank, 1840-1955, A Double Biography. The book, written by St. Joseph native Sheridan Logan, is a biography both of the First National Bank of New York and its chief executive, George F. Baker. Baker specialized in handling U.S. government securities as well as rehabilitating railroads and other key businesses. His bank often paid dividends of 100% a year. The book covers periods of panics, wars, depressions and recessions. There is a color photograph of Mr. Baker opposite the title page. It tells the stories of his trusted lieutenants who learned from Baker and helped maintain the integrity of the bank. Mr. Baker in his later years gave more than $22 million to charitable purposes. Sheridan Logan went to work for Mr. Baker nine days after his graduation from Harvard. From 1942-1965, Logan was executive secretary of the George F. Baker Trust, endowed by Mr. Baker in his will.
