Description

God's Children continues the story about the Plantation Hampton along the Great Santee River in South Carolina that he began in his first book, "Home by the River. This plantation is alleged to be the only plantation in the Deep South still occupied by the original family, who have lived on the plantation since 1686. God's Children are the Negro families who have lived at Hampton for many generations. These Negroes know little of the modern world. But of life or human character, of wilderness ways, of the ways of the woodsman and hunger, they seem to know everything. Rutledge includes a description of their religion. There are photographic studies of persons mentioned in the book, taken by Noble Brerzman. 183/Hardbound/Photographs.
