Goetz, William L.,: Synopsis of his Association with St. Joseph Museum, 1927-1953. Typewritten summary, author unidentified.
"William L. Goetz was elected the first President of the Board of Directors of the St. Joseph Museum on July 21, 1927 and served in that capacity until his death on December 26, 1953 at age 86. An editorial in the October 4, 1948, St. Joseph News-Press said of Mr. Goetz: 'Were it not for him, we would have not museum today, with due respect to the Science Club which planted the seed. Mr. Goetz has done nobly by this Museum.' It was Mr. Goetz who purchased the George Native American Collection for the museum. Mr. Goetz personally donated one half of the purchase price of the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion, and his Goetz Brewing Co. paid the other half. When legal question arose, Mr. Goetz and his attorney, Colonel John D. McNeely, handled them. They were the ones who saw to it that a bill was introduced in the state legislature making it possible to establish a city museum in St. Joseph. Their bill became the basis for laws governing the establishment of municipally supported museums in Missouri. Mr. Goetz led the campaign to pass a levy for a ½ mill on the dollar tax for the support of the museum. The campaign was successful, and the museum started receiving those funds in the spring of 1949."
