Great Flood of 1993, Post-Flood Report, Main Report, September 1994. Upper Mississippi River and Lower Missouri River Basins. Report on Flood, its aftermath, and FEMA assistance.
April-July, 1993 excessive amounts of rain produced flooding in a nine-state area in the upper Mississippi River Basin and affected the Missouri River basin in three states. Both the Mississippi River and the Missouri River crested in the same week. Barge traffic was suspended below Dubuque, IA from June to Mid-August. Flooding continued until mid-September. At Hannibal, the Mississippi River stayed above flood stage for 6 months.
On the Missouri River, downstream of Omaha, reservoirs could not hold the run off. The Flood of 1993 was in excess of a 100-year flood and in some areas even a 500-year flood.
The report includes a color photograph of the levee breech at Elwood, Kansas
