The American Heritage History of THE GREAT WEST is organized chronologically, starting in 1763, telling all the things which went on to make up the western part of the United States, ending in 1914. It is the story of the men and women of all races and different origins and beliefs who helped shape the character of a nation. It starts in 1763 when the Treaty of Paris ordered the French out of North America and established England's dominion as far west as the Mississippi. Trappers, pioneers, missionaries, adventurers and mountain men pushed forward past the Mississippi, however. THE GREAT WEST follows the courses of succeeding waves of migrants, explains and shows where and how they went, and what happened when they got there.
