Description

Gunn, Mattie & Friends, Field Play Girl Actress, Photo, c. 1876. b/w. Copy of a photo of three young girls, c. ages 4-10 wearing period clothing. The older girl is seated on low stool with book in her lap. Two younger girls are seated leaning into her as she reads. From Museum Graphic, Winter, 1956, Vol, VII, No. 1. p. 3. Article: Mattie Gunn & Friends. Describes Eugene Field visiting Professor Neely's subscription school east of the present Downtown Library to select pupils to play parts in a home talent play he was producing at McLaughlin's hall, SW corner of Third & Francis. The characters were taken from Charles Dickens works. Mattie, about 10 years old, agreed to play the part which required her to wear boys' clothes. One day in company with two school mates she was passing the Lozo photo gallery at Sixth & Francis when Lozo induced the three to pose for a photograph. "The girl on the left with the book in her lap is Mary Thompson, daughter of the newspaperman Charles M. Thompson, and niece of General M. Jeff Thompson. Center is Mattie Gunn, herself and the blond on the right in rapt attention is Maggie Richardson, daugther of Doctor R.P. Richardson. Mattie Gunn's father was superintendent of the new iron bridge across the Missouri river. She is now Mrs. A.P. Clayton, also ninety years of age, who resides at 208 North Nineteenth street in St. Joseph. She was the only one of the three in Field's presentation and remembers Eugene Field quite well. Gussie Comstock, his sister-in-law was also a friend of Mattie Gunn in those days..." Original digital scan located on History CD 02
