Research Notes

Notes

This is likely a Colt 1873 Single Action Army, known popularly as the "Peacemaker". It was originally designed to replace the Colt Model 1860 as the official revolver of the United States Army. Its innovative use of self-contained cartridges, rather than loose powder, offered a significant upgrade that helped to usher in a new generation of firearms. Cartridges allowed for faster reloading, and made the gun far more accurate and reliable. This firearm was widely used in the American Frontier Indian Wars, as well as the Spanish American War. It also became extremely popular among civilians, including lawmen, outlaws, and cowboys. It has since become an iconic symbol of the Wild West, cementing itself as the quintessential revolver of the era. It has since been featured in many popular Western movies and television shows, and is so beloved by the public that it continues to be in production to this day.
