Research Notes

Notes

This is likely a Savage 1861 Navy revolver, produced by the Savage Revolving Firearms Company of Middletown, Connecticut. This unique handgun featured a two trigger mechanism, where the lower trigger rotated the cylinder and cocked the hammer and the upper trigger fired the gun. The U.S. government bought 12,000 of these revolvers during the Civil War and issued them to 26 cavalry regiments. A small number were also used by Confederate forces after they were privately purchased and smuggled south. This cap and ball revolver fired a .36 caliber ball that could be accurate up to 25 yards.
