Research Notes

Notes

This is likely a U.S. Navy white hat, which replaced impractical straw hats as the designated summer cap in 1886. Originally made from canvas, they were transitioned to a cheaper and more comfortable cotton twill construction by World War I. By World War II, they had earned the nickname of the "Dixie Cup" hat due to their similar appearance to the disposable paper cups manufactured by the Dixie Cup Company.
