Description

Hermann Stieffel, Soldier Artist of the West. German-born Hermann Stieffel was a private for 24 years in the U.S. Infantry. He painted a series of watercolors while serving in the Indian country in the 1860's and 1870's. Untutored, nevertheless, he had an unusally canny eye for the colorful and graphic and his meticulous attention to detail have provided a valuable pictorial documentary on the West during the Indian wars. 16/Softbound/Illustrations/Photographs.
